Write on Sports

Write on Sports prides itself on giving middle school students personal attention to meet them where they are academically. Our mission for our summer writing camps is to cultivate a progression of literacy skills whether that is to help further develop more complex creative writing practices or to help nurture the fundamental skills of reading and writing. Students in our summer writing workshops have the freedom to pick a topic of their choice and utilize today’s technology to create impactful projects including student-led videos and student-produced podcasts.

The Write on Sports Guest Day is a favorite day for students and staff! Guest Day creates an opportunity for students to practice and develop interviewing skills through a “press conference” or “locker room” style setting, going one-on-one with the athlete and journalist, building self-confidence along the way.

Write on Sports students attend a sports event, having an opportunity to interview athletes either pre or post game to contribute to a spot story or feature article. Students have attended NJ Jackals Games, a speed-skating demonstration by Gold-medal olympian LinLin Sun and a tour of the MLB Network, to name a few!

Write on Sports students collaborate on video projects, podcasts, write feature stories and works of fiction. The articles and stories are published in a camp magazine, the videos and podcasts are featured on the website. On the final day of the program, students present their work to an audience of staff, parents and peers.

Often, Write on Sports students from affiliate creative writing programs and the flagship sports journalism program come together for combined free summer writing camp events including trips to NJ Jackals home games and a special Q&A with Harold Reynolds (MLB Network).
